What is Accelerated Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontic treatment such as braces and Invisalign® work by “remodeling” the bone structure in your teeth and jaws over time. At our offices, our orthodontists use Micro-osteoperforation (also known as MOP) to speed up teeth movement during regular adjustment visits. Normally, our jaw bones and teeth are built to withstand everyday forces such as chewing and external trauma. MOP technology uses tiny micropulses that are directed with pinpoint accuracy to the areas of the jaw that need it the most. These micropulses “tell” the bone and connective tissue molecules in the jaw that they are safe from trauma, and to loosen up and move along the direction your orthodontist has designed during treatment.
AcceleDent also uses Micro-osteoperforation (MOP) technology, and is available as a handheld device. These micropulses are about 8 times gentler than the pulses from an electric toothbrush. Simply hold the device over your orthodontic treatment for about 20 minutes per day. The device charges with a standard USB port, and is easy to rinse and keep clean.
These accelerated orthodontic treatment options can be used on any permanent dentition, meaning both teens and adults can take advantage of this technology. Micro-osteoperforation technology not only reduces treatment time by up to 50%, but can also bring the added benefit of reducing the discomfort of teeth movement that some adults experience, as our jaws are fully developed and may not have the bone structure flexibility of a teenager.
