My name is Amelia L. Griggs, MPH, BSDH, RDH. As an African American dental professional, my goal to continue to inspire my patients and break barriers for other minorities dental providers in this industry. My native hometown is Chicago, IL. A fun fact about myself is that I am a twin of 2 sets of twins and one elder sister in my immediate family. Including, in my spare time I enjoy exploring my other talent as a makeup artist and traveling with my twin sister.
I have obtained my Master’s degree in Community Health Practice from DePaul University. I desired to get advance education during the pandemic, because I see it will be of great value to my dental hygiene background. My experience at DePaul has granted me the privilege to developed leadership skills in variety public health projects to improve the quality of life for surrounding communities. I have obtained my Bachelor of Science in Dental hygiene from Southern Illinois University Carbondale. I have worked both in private practice and dental public health experience for 7 years. As a dental hygienist, I like the ability to build great patient and provider relationships chairside by empowering and educating patients on preventive oral care and highlighting relative educational tips to improve their overall health. In my dental public health experience, I traveled to Chicago Public schools in partnership with “Dentist ‘R’ Us” to provide nutrition counseling, applied fluoride varnish, and placed dental sealants on the teeth of students in need of care. This experience made me feel proud, because it is an effective way to deliver sealants to children who are less likely to receive private dentalcare. I was able to deliver education on non-healthy food choices connected to cavities development. I enjoy educating children on their oral health and connecting to their general health. I love to collaborate with other healthcare providers and community organizations to contribute innovative ideals for patients to maintain proper oral and general health habits. I helped coordinated a diabetes prevention lifestyle change program with non-profit organization called “A work of Faith Ministries, INC”. The program purpose was to help young adults to geriatric individuals at risk for type two diabetes. This experience helped me learned and eliminate challenges for people to gain to access to health services. I always stay persistent to stay updated of the latest innovative tools to ensure patient care. I obtained continue education courses and certifications in soft tissues laser and iTero scan imaging. This new system can help change how dental professionals, view and educate patients on new developments with their teeth and gum health.
